For the first time, the Distance Learning Program Foundations Diploma course is being offered to the seekers of the Sacred Knowledge residing in Melbourne, VIC. An online Foundations course, it consists of an introduction and detailed information to the various important Islamic Sciences, which have direct relevance to our Personal Obligations (Fara'id al 'Ayn) and Communal Obligations (Fara'id al-Kifaya).
The 12-month period of study will include:
- lectures and tutorials,
- practical exercises and case studies,
- reading and practical assignments,
- assessments, with the final pass awarding a Diploma.
Distance Learning Program Learning Tools and Facilities:
- Online access to course notes and pre-recorded course lectures
- Access to a DLP Students online forum, to discuss, ask questions or to provide additional information to students, and to have a social point of contact with other students.
- A facilitated communal study classroom that will allow students to meet and study together on weekly basis.
- Teacher-contact classes in which the teacher would visit the students in order to elaborate on course material and give students the opportunity to ask questions directly and interact with the teacher.
Course outline:
The diploma comprises of 3 certificate programs, each consisting of four modules. The outline of the diploma modules is below:
Certificate 1:
Module 1: Introduction to Islamic Jurisprudence (3 weeks)
Introduction to the principles of Islamic Jurisprudence, its development over time and the importance of following a specific school of fiqh (madhab) in Islam
Module 2: Aqeedah (6 weeks)
The study of Aqeedah at-Tahawiyah, the Standard Text for Aqeedah matters.
Module 3: Purification and Prayer (8 weeks)
The study of purification and prayer based on the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools.
Module 4: Fasting (4 weeks)
The study of fasting based on the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools
Certificate 2:
Module 1: Zakat (4 weeks)
The study of Zakat based on the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools
Module 2: Hajj (4 weeks)
The study of Hajj based on the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools
Module 3: Trade (4 weeks)
The study of the Fiqh of Trade based on the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools.
Module 4: Finance (4 weeks)
The study of Finance based on the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools
Certificate 3:
Module 1: Marriage & Divorce (8 weeks)
The rights & responsibilities in marriage, the marriage contract, rules of divorce and rights of responsibilities of the ex-husband and ex-wife
Module 2: Funerals (6 weeks)
Covering the Hanafi and Shafi'i Fiqh of death and Funerals, including practical training on washing and shrouding
Module 3: Wills (4 weeks)
Rules of inheritance and wills
Module 4: Introduction to Tassawuf & Akhlaq (4 weeks)
Tasawwuf is a forgotten Science which always went hand in hand with the Sciences of Fiqh in traditional times. This module looks at essentials of Tasawwuf in the Path of Purification of one's soul.
Terms & Conditions
- A minimum of five students are required for the course to be initiated and continued.
- Students should study communally once a week (a communal study classroom will be facilitated for the students).
- Students must attend the Teacher-contact sessions for the modules as required. Students will be removed from the program if they miss the Teacher-Contact classes without valid and approved reason.
- A diploma student is not required to finish the entire diploma program in one year. Students may split the study of the certificates across years of study.
- A prerequisite to obtaining any of the certificates is to attend and pass the exams for modules 1 and 2 of certificate 1.
- To qualify for the final award, the student must have had a minimum of 80% attendance, with a pass in all tests and assessments.
